About the Course:
This material for this course examines issues pertaining to women in recovery groups. The first article tests the efficacy of the Women’s Recovery Group (WRG) vs mixed gender groups. The second article test 12-step groups vs secular recoups including SMART, WGS, and LifeRing for treating addiction. We generally had better outcomes in single gender groups. Secular groups are a viable alternative to 12-step groups, however groups largely vary on recovery goals. This is a research-heavy course.
This course is based on the article, Measuring affiliation in group therapy for substance use disorders in the Women’s Recovery Group Study: Does it matter whether the group is all-women or mixed-gender?, created by Dawn E. Sugarman, PhD et al in October of 2016 and the article A Longitudinal Study of the Comparative Efficacy of Women for Sobriety, LifeRing, SMART Recovery, and 12-step Groups for those with AUD created by Sarah E. Zemore, PhD et al in Febraury of 2017.
