About the Course:

To date, only two medications have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for eating disorders: lisdexamfetamine for binge-eating disorder (BED) and fluoxetine for bulimia nervosa (BN). While these two drugs are effective, what are options for patients who cannot tolerate these medications or do not find them helpful? This article describes the results of the first study to rigorously investigate a promising new treatment option for BED and BN: phentermine-topiramate extended release (PHEN/TPM-ER). In addition to helping readers make sense of the study’s major findings, this article will also explain the rationale behind this dual combination drugs including potential mechanisms of action. Finally, this article will help readers stay up-to-date on the latest treatment options for patients who do not have optimal responses to existing FDA-approved medications.
This course is based on the article, A randomized, placebo-controlled crossover trial in patients with binge-eating disorder and bulimia nervosa created by Debra L. Safer MD, et al. in 2019.
