About the Course

This course provides a careful overview of empirically supported therapies for stress and trauma in children and adolescents. The course focuses on the stressors of sexual abuse, divorce, and bereavement as well as general principles of stress and coping. Neurobiological, behavioral, cognitive, and parenting-related factors in etiology and recovery are examined, and there are examples of questions therapists can use to assess these factors. The relevant outcome research is summarized in a user-friendly fashion, and the course explains how this research can be integrated with assessment findings to individualize therapy for each client. There is step-by-step instruction in exposure-based CBT for trauma, helping victims with self-blame, coaching clients in coping, psychoeducation about divorce, and grief-work with the goal of acceptance. There are case illustrations and numerous examples of good words to say in various clinical situations.

This course is based on chapter 15 of the book, Child and Adolescent Therapy: Science and Art, 2nd Edition created by Jeremy Shapiro in 2015.
