"Research-Based, Clinically Savvy Therapy for Anxiety in Children and Adolescents"

This course provides a careful overview of empirically supported therapies for anxiety in children and adolescents. The course reviews neurobiological, behavioral, cognitive, and parenting-related etiological factors in anxiety and provides examples of questions therapists can use to assess these factors. The relevant outcome research is summarized in a user-friendly fashion, and the course explains how this research can be integrated with assessment findings to individualize therapy for each client. There is step-by-step instruction in the main cognitive-behavioral techniques for treating anxiety, including psychoeducation, cognitive restructuring, testing predictions, self-correcting for personal biases and, especially, exposure. The course also explains how to use psychodynamically informed interventions to address the fantasy fears of young children—fears which are usually so distant from rational thinking processes that they cannot be addressed by cognitive work. There are case illustrations and numerous examples of good words to say in various clinical situations.

Shapiro, Ph.D., a clinical child psychologist and adjunct faculty member of the Psychological Sciences Department of Case Western Reserve University, has 30+ years of experience as a psychotherapist, researcher, and trainer. Dr. Shapiro has published 7 books and numerous articles on topics including child abuse, depression, youth violence prevention, psychotherapy methods, and naturalistic outcome research, and he has presented over 200 workshops to therapists in over 40 states. From the beginning, the central focus of Dr. Shapiro’s career has been integrating scientific findings with clinical reasoning to develop effective, practical strategies for helping clients.
