About the Course:

The course examines value conflicts and ethical dilemmas in social work. This study explores topics that may affect the professional relationship between social work and client. It includes the exploration of five groups of values, and several issues likely to come up in dealing with clients including, homosexuality, abortion, out of wedlock birth, euthanasia, and corporal punishment, among others, between African American and white social workers. It also deals with whether participants felt their values agreed with the social work profession.

Andrew Edwards, MSW, Ph.D.

Dr. Edwards is a professor of social work at Cleveland State University. He has worked in the field for over 20 years and is the co-writer of a mini-grant funded by the Cleveland Foundation. The grant, Project ACCESS: Capacity Building is for faithbased social service organizations. Fellowship Human Development Center was the recipient of the grant. The grant provided for computer hardware, software, fiscal consultation, and tuition for staff to pursue graduate study in social work.

Mamadou M. Seck, Ph.D.

A nine year teaching experience in a village, working with children and parents, inspired Dr Seck to become a social worker with at risk youth. After few years of field practice as a Social Worker, he joined the Ohio Department of Youth Services for additional training as a youth counselor. He worked at the Cuyahoga County Juvenile Detention Center as he attended Case Western University, Mandel School of Applied Social Science. After earning an MSSA and a PhD in 2007, he joined Cleveland State University as an adjunct, then visiting assistant professor, and later full time assistant professor in 2007. His experiences in Social Work as student, field supervisor, instructor, and Social Work school administrator, inspired him to write on issues related to juvenile justice, social work education and student success, group work, developmental disability, and economic and social development.
