Margaret (Peggy) Swarbrick, Ph.D., FAOTA

Margaret (Peggy) Swarbrick, Ph.D., FAOTA works with the Collaborative Support Programs of New Jersey Wellness Institute. She is a member of the Recovery-To-Practice committee. She has worked at the collaborative support programs of New Jersey for 18 years and she is an associate professor at Rutgers University. Peggy is involved in research, training, and consulting activities in the area of wellness and health promotion, employment services, and the role of peer support. She is a worker in strategies for enhancing recovery to participation in valued occupations. Her 2009 article in the Occupational Therapy in Mental Health Journal, a wellness and recovery model for state psychiatric hospitals, informed portions of this webinar.

Theresa Miskimen, M.D.

Theresa Miskimen, M.D. works with the Rutgers University Behavioral Health Center (UBHC) Medical Services, and is a Professor of Psychiatry, RWJMS. She is the vice president for medical services at Rutgers University behavior health care, otherwise known as UBHC, which is New Jersey’s largest provider of behavioral health care services. She is certified as a psychiatrist by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, and is a distinguished fellow in the American Psychiatric Association. She works at regional and national levels including most recently serving as the New Jersey representative to the assembly at APA. She divides her time between clinical practice, administration, teaching, and clinical research.

Anna Hollis, Ph.D., NCSP, is a nationally certified School Psychologist, currently practicing in Detroit, Michigan. She is licensed as a psychologist and certified as a school psychologist to practice in 2 states (Michigan and South Carolina). She is a member of the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP); the Michigan Association of School Psychologists (MASP); and the Association for Contextual Behavioral Science (ACBS). Dr. Hollis obtained her Ph.D. in School Psychology from the University of South Carolina. Her professional interests include Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT); Positive Psychology; Trauma-Informed Practice; and Urban School Psychology.

Course Objectives:

  1. Discuss the guiding principles of recovery which help to form a wellness framework for creating environments of hope and wellness in hospital settings.

  2. Identify and discuss practical strategies for creating hope-filled recovery-oriented environments, including staff development and training recommendations.

  3. Describe the role of psychiatrists and the multidisciplinary team in creating recovery-oriented environments of hope and wellness, and discuss some examples of actions being taken in current programs.
