About the Course:
The purpose of this course is to help clinicians identify when there is evidence for an underlying organic condition to refer patients for medical workup when necessary. This is accomplished by addressing needs that many therapists experience regarding; how the signs and symptoms of organic disorders can masquerade as mental conditions; how to recognize a need for medical referral; and how to work in collaboration with the patient, the family, and other health care providers to see the referral through to a satisfactory conclusion. These goals are achieved through clear and informative writing, the introduction of numerous case examples, and by avoiding unnecessary medical jargon while still conveying sophisticated scientific clinical knowledge. The course is specially structured so as to introduce diverse information in manageable portions and to cycle back to examine it from a variety of perspectives.

About the Author:
Barbara Schildkrout, MD is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. She has a subspecialty Board Certification through the United Council for Neurological Subspecialties in behavioral neurology and neuropsychiatry. In addition to many years spent teaching at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Dr. Schildkrout has maintained a private clinical practice in the Boston area for over twenty-five years.
This course is recommended for health care professionals, especially clinicians practicing in the areas of psychology, counseling, and social worker, who seek to identify and understand the symptoms of medical conditions that may accompany or even mimic psychological problems. The course is appropriate for an intermediate to advanced level of participants’ knowledge.
