About the Course

This course covers the basic facts, guidelines & criteria exemplars of Autism Spectrum Disorder as defined by the DSM-5. This course will discuss the changes from DSM-IV to DSM-5 regarding autism-related disorders, as well as define the DSM-5 diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder. Specific guidelines for clinicians are presented, and clear examples are discussed.

This course is based on the reading-based online article, DSM-5 Autism Spectrum Disorder created by American Psychiatric Association and Lauren Carpenter, Ph.D, BCBA in 2013.

Lauren Carpenter, Ph.D, BCBA
Lauren Carpenter, Ph.D, BCBA is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the Medical University of South Carolina. Dr. Carpenter received a B.A. in Psychology from the University of California at San Diego and a PhD in Clinical Psychology from the State University of New York at Binghamton. She completed her internship and postdoctoral fellowship at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), focusing on neuropsychology and on autism spectrum disorders. She currently is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics in the Department of Pediatrics, Division of Genetics and Developmental Pediatrics at MUSC. Dr. Carpenter's clinical interests include autism spectrum disorders, neuropsychological assessment, and applied behavior analysis. Dr. Carpenter is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst. She coordinates an autism spectrum disorder diagnostic clinic and provides evaluation and consultation for children with neurological and psychiatric diagnoses. She supervises psychology interns and post-doctoral fellows in the area of pediatric assessment, with a focus on autism spectrum disorders.

Keith Gibson, Ph.D.
Dr. Gibson is a Clinical Psychologist with over 30 years in research, clinical and consulting practice. He has also held leadership roles in research administration and program evaluation and more recently has specialized in program evaluation and system analysis. He draws upon his years of expertise as a practicing psychologist, administrator, researcher and technologist to help universities evaluate their programs to implement, meet, and maintain CACREP standards.

  1. Describe Autism Spectrum Disorder as defined by the DSM-5 and discuss the relevant changes from the previous DSM-IV regarding autism-related disorders.
  2. Define and discuss DSM-5 Autism Spectrum Disorder guidelines for clinicians.
  3. Identify criteria exemplars for the diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder according to the DSM-5.
