About the Course:

Falender and Shafranske present a resource text for mental health professionals currently providing supervision in academic, training, and treatment situations, and for students and practitioners studying supervision research for the first time. The authors critically examine the theoretical and empirical literature and present a competency-based model of clinical supervision. Coverage includes effective practices in supervision, technical competence, personal factors, the therapeutic and supervisory alliance, diversity competence, ethical and legal responsibilities and case management, and evaluation.

Carol A. Falender

Carol A. Falender, Ph.D., is an adjunct professor at Pepperdine University and clinical professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of California, Los Angeles. Dr. Falender has been assistant director of training and then director of training for over 20 years at American Psychological Association (APA)-accredited community mental health programs. She has served as chair of the California Psychological Association Division of Education and Training, and has been a longstanding member of the Los Angeles County Psychological Association Ethics Committee. She received the Outstanding Supervisor of the Year award from the California Psychological Association Division of Education and Training. Dr. Falendar is also a practicing clinician and clinical supervisor.

Edward P. Shafraske

Edward P. Shafranske, Ph.D., ABPP, is a professor of psychology, Charles and Harriet Luckman Distinguished Teaching Fellow (1997-2002), and director of the doctoral program in clinical psychology at Pepperdine University. A fellow of the American Psychological Association (APA), Dr. Shafranske has been the president of APA’s Division 36 (Psychology of Religion), a member of the APA Council of Representatives, and the chair of the California Psychological Association Division of Education and Training. In addition to academic and research activities, Dr. Shafranske maintains a private practice in clinical psychology in Irvine, California.

This course is recommended for health care professionals, especially addiction counselors, psychologists, mental health counselors, social workers, and nurses who seek knowledge about effective practices in supervision, technical competence, personal factors, the therapeutic and supervisory alliance, diversity competence, ethical and legal responsibilities and case management, and evaluation. It is appropriate for all levels of participants’ knowledge.
