About the Course

Seemingly unending numbers of recent revelations of boyhood sexual abuse have included allegations related to the Catholic Church, workplaces, universities, the military, Congressional pageboys, Orthodox Jewish yeshivas, private and public schools, and the Boy Scouts of America, among many others. Concurrently, men in the sports, entertainment, political, and journalism worlds have publicly disclosed sexual victimization histories.

Research suggests that one in six boys has suffered unwanted direct sexual victimization by age 16. In order to treat this population, clinicians must be aware of the unique challenges male victims face in processing this trauma. This workshop will address these special issues for sexually abused boys and men. Particular attention will be given to the interpersonal core of sexual betrayal trauma and to themes of male gender socialization, sexual orientation concerns, effects of abuse by male as well as female victimizers; and cultural myths that interfere with men recognizing their sexual betrayal, disclosing it, and/or processing it.

The workshop leader has in 30+ years worked with over 2000 men sexually abused as boys or younger men. Examples from his clinical experience will illustrate many points made. Participants are encouraged to bring up their own case material.

This course is based on the recorded webinar, #metoo, Too: Understanding the Sexual Betrayal of Boys and Men created by Richard B Gartner, PhD in 2019.
